Every cup of coffee has a story that begins far from the café. But where exactly do coffee beans come from? The short answer: coffee beans are the seeds of a fruit called a coffee cherry, grown in tropical regions around the world, and handpicked by smallholder farmers before being processed, dried, and roasted into the beans we brew.

The Coffee Belt

Coffee grows best in the “coffee belt,” an equatorial band that stretches across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Climate, altitude, and soil all shape the final flavor in your cup. Explore our coffee origins:

Hand-Picked, Farmer-Grown

Unlike industrial crops, most high-quality coffee is grown by hand. Farmers plant, prune, and carefully monitor their trees. When cherries ripen, they're selectively picked and delivered to cooperatives or processors.

How Climate Impacts Coffee

Temperature, rainfall, and extreme weather have a direct impact on cherry growth and quality. Learn how we help farmers adapt with early warning systems, crop insurance, and more on our Climate Smart Coffee page.
