What Is Kenya?

Kenya is a country in East Africa known for its diverse landscapes, strong agricultural sector, and world-renowned coffee. The name “Kenya” is believed to be derived from Mount Kenya, the country's highest peak, which has long been central to its geography and identity.

Today, Kenya is one of the most recognized coffee-producing countries in the world, with high-altitude farms, volcanic soil, and consistent growing conditions that contribute to its distinctive flavor profiles.

Kenyan Coffee Overview

Kenya is a powerhouse in specialty coffee. The quality of top coffee lots is rewarded through the weekly Nairobi auction, a unique system where quality directly links to price.

The best Kenya coffees are known for complex brightness — think citrus, berry, and black currant. They're bold, juicy, and clean — not for people who dislike acidity, but a dream for those who do.

Flavor profiles range from citrus and spice to winey and syrupy sweet. A great Kenyan coffee balances acidity with sweet complexity, often with floral notes and high clarity.

Kenya coffee has around 700,000 farmers, most of whom are smallholder farmers with less than 1 acre of farmland.

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE) is one of the most sophisticated coffee auction systems in the world. Every Tuesday, coffee samples are cupped and graded, with the highest quality lots fetching premium prices. This system has been instrumental in maintaining Kenya's reputation for exceptional coffee quality.
