The Story of Gathaithi Coffee Factory
The cooperative is in Nyeri County, Tetu sub-county, Gathaithi village. It was established in 1967, then being under the larger Tetu cooperative. In June, 2000, it was registered autonomously as Gathaithi Farmers’ cooperative Society. It currently has one wet wet mill (factory) with a total membership of 2332 members, out of which 1783 are active with a total number of 230,000 coffee trees giving a total average of 870,700 kilos of cherries annually. Gathaithi cooperative society has one factory sitting on a 3.142 Ha piece of land. In 2022, Gathaithi cooperative society scored 93 points with a balanced floral-toned Kenyan cup with distinct notes of black currant, a pleasing savory fruit attribute often associated with classic Kenyan coffees. In 2024, it emerged second nationally by paying its members KSH 126 per kilo of cherry delivered, a milestone achieved courtesy of ARABIKA project interventions and positive reception and project ownership by her board as well as supervisory committee members.
