Our Impact

We work at the intersection of climate, technology, and food systems. In Kenya, over 1,000 farmers accessed AI-powered crop insurance and climate alerts. Farmers saw stronger yields, early warnings, and faster recovery from shocks. Our pilot showed clear potential to scale resilience and livelihoods.

With support from USAID’s Development Innovation Ventures (DIV), we are conducting a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to rigorously measure our impact on farmer decision-making and investment behavior. This research goes beyond insurance payouts—it evaluates how our tools help farmers proactively build resilience in the face of climate change.

We support cooperatives and supply chain partners working toward sustainability. Our model includes data-backed impact, diaspora engagement, and a direct link from climate tools to market premiums. Roasters are already selling coffee that helps fund climate resilience.

Innovation

We combine AI, insurance, and agro-advisory tools to boost climate resilience:

• Insurance and alerts designed with Liberty Mutual Re to protect farmer incomes.
• NASA Harvest maps used to identify climate-exposed growing zones and improve decision-making.
• Parametric insurance reduces admin burden and pays faster during disasters.

Designed in Kenya with Farmers

We co-created our tools in Kenya with 1,000+ Kenyan coffee farmers—working side-by-side to build, test, and improve through real-time feedback. Local cooperatives led the coordination and outreach. In 2024 we won the Inspire Challenge with ICT4Ag, increasing women's engagement in our agtech solution to 30%!

Global Scale

Climate Smart Coffee was endorsed by the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance as a highly scalable model to unlock climate finance in smallholder supply chains. The Lab identified the potential to reach 3 million farmers and protect $4.2 billion in crop value across Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. Our model leverages existing cooperative structures and mobile technology, which enables rapid expansion across geographies and crops.

We started and scaled in Kenya, where over 10,000 coffee farmers now use our tools. With pilots underway in Guatemala, Cameroon, and Rwanda—and demand growing from roasters and cooperatives—we’re building a platform ready for scale. By aligning digital tools, farmer engagement, and market incentives, we aim to transform how climate finance reaches the frontline of climate change: tropical farmers.
